CMYF MENTOR PROGRAM

CAL Berkeley's Athletic Department is faced with a challenge - a challenge that deals with athletes' performance off the playing field. Felony acts, such as rape, assault, vandalism, and drug abuse. Have all increased. These offenders have chosen not to follow the guidelines set up by the University or by society. What responsibility does CAL have to these athletes, If any at all? There are limited options: a) revoke the athletes' scholarship or b) expulsion from the University. Neither solution is adequate to rectify the situation.

Together with CAL and the Berkeley Police Department, CMYF offers a diversion program of self-awareness that directly leads to self-responsibility. The program is tailored specifically for the individual and combines weekly group interaction with individual attention, providing the athlete an arena to identify his or her personal strengths, needs, and challenges.

The second phase of the program involves community service, which includes manual labor at specific sites at CAL or any other viable community project, giving the participant a point of reference from which to evaluate the life choices that lay ahead. These experiences will reinforce the importance of education and that must be given priority for a successful life.

The Chuck Muncie Youth Foundation offers real solutions to real world challenges.
